The ROW DTLA Video Montage
In this project, I created a video montage about The ROW in Downtown Los Angeles, California. Once a bustling industrial complex, the ROW is now a 32-acre district that is home to many retailers and restaurants with office spaces for businesses.
Brief
This project’s scope was to create a video montage with a voiceover that makes tourists and Los Angeles natives alike want to visit the ROW. I was responsible for framing the ROW, writing and voicing the narration, planning and shooting video content, and editing it all together. The piece was shot on iPhone and edited with Premiere Pro.
Ideation & Exploration
I began finding as much information about the ROW as possible via their website and internet searches. Once I felt more familiar with the history of the location, I began scouting locations and subjects by walking the location. I also watched existing video content made by the ROW’s creative team to see what aspects they highlight and how they present the area as a whole. Having worked in an office in the ROW, I already felt highly familiar with the setting and was bursting with ideas to test.
Design Process
Before I began shooting, I took photos to plan out different shots and experiment with various cinematic compositions. I also looked for locations that had subtle movement that would make shots more interesting than places that are completely static.
Once I had completed photographing the area, I made a storyboard to better plan the shots, order I wanted them to appear in, and the narration that would accompany it.
Once the storyboard was complete, I returned to the location to film. I used a tripod to ensure each shot was steady and level. I also made sure to arrive at the location early in the morning when fewer people are there to make sure no bystanders accidentally walked into my shots.
Results
The outcome of this project was a video montage about the ROW in Downtown Los Angeles. This project is not for commercial use but an exercise of audio and video recording and editing skills.
